GST, HST, PST and QST explained
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the 5% federal sales tax. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the GST with a provincial component into a single tax in participating provinces. PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is a separate retail sales tax charged in addition to the GST in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. QST (Quebec Sales Tax) is Quebec's value-added tax, charged at 9.975% in addition to the GST.

How to add sales tax
To add tax, calculate each component from the before-tax amount and sum them:
Total = Before Tax × (1 + Combined Rate)
For example, in British Columbia (5% GST + 7% PST = 12%): $100 × 1.12 = $112.00.
How to remove tax from a total
To remove tax, divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + the combined rate):
Before Tax = Total ÷ (1 + Combined Rate)
For example, in Ontario (13% HST): $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax, with $13.00 of HST.
Why your actual sales tax may be different
This calculator applies the standard general sales tax rate only. Actual tax treatment can vary because of zero-rated supplies (such as basic groceries and prescription drugs), exempt supplies (such as certain financial services and residential rent), special taxes on alcohol, tobacco, fuel and vehicles, accommodation taxes, place-of-supply rules, rebates, First Nations tax situations, and business-specific rules. Always confirm your situation with the CRA or the applicable provincial tax authority.
GST vs HST vs PST vs QST
- GST — 5% federal tax, applies in every province and territory.
- HST — single harmonized tax (13%–15%) in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and PEI.
- PST / RST — separate provincial retail sales tax in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, charged alongside the GST.
- QST — Quebec's 9.975% sales tax, charged alongside the GST on the same pre-tax base.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I calculate sales tax in Canada?
- Sales tax in Canada depends on the province or territory of supply. Most goods and services are subject to the 5% federal GST, and many provinces add a provincial sales tax (PST), a harmonized sales tax (HST), or the Quebec sales tax (QST). To add tax, multiply the before-tax amount by the applicable combined rate. To remove tax, divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + combined rate).
- How do I remove GST or HST from a total?
- Divide the tax-inclusive total by (1 + the applicable tax rate). For example, a $113 total in Ontario (13% HST) gives $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, with $13 of HST. This calculator does this automatically in 'Remove tax' mode.
- What is the difference between GST and HST?
- The GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax. The HST is a harmonized sales tax that combines the federal GST and a participating province's provincial tax into a single tax administered by the CRA. HST provinces include Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
- Which provinces charge PST?
- British Columbia (7% PST), Manitoba (7% RST), and Saskatchewan (6% PST) charge a provincial sales tax in addition to the 5% GST. Quebec charges the QST (9.975%) instead of a PST. Alberta and the three territories do not charge a provincial sales tax.
- What is QST?
- QST is the Quebec sales tax (taxe de vente du Québec), charged at 9.975% in addition to the 5% GST. Under the current official methodology, both the GST and QST are calculated on the same pre-tax selling price; QST is not charged on top of the GST.
- Does Alberta have provincial sales tax?
- No. Alberta does not levy a provincial sales tax. Only the 5% federal GST applies to most taxable goods and services in Alberta. The same is true for the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.
- How is sales tax calculated in British Columbia?
- In British Columbia, the 5% GST and 7% PST are both calculated on the before-tax amount, for a combined general rate of 12%. For example, on a $100 before-tax purchase, GST is $5.00, PST is $7.00, and the total after tax is $112.00.
- How is HST calculated in Ontario?
- Ontario charges a single 13% HST, which combines the 5% federal GST and an 8% provincial component. On a $100 before-tax purchase, the HST is $13.00 and the total after tax is $113.00.
- Are all purchases subject to sales tax?
- No. Some supplies are zero-rated (taxed at 0%, such as basic groceries and prescription drugs) and others are exempt (no tax charged at all, such as certain financial services and residential rent). Special rules also apply to alcohol, fuel, vehicles, accommodation, books, and other categories. This calculator uses the general rate only.
- Why might my receipt differ from this calculator?
- Your receipt may differ because of exemptions, zero-rated goods, special taxes on alcohol, fuel or vehicles, place-of-supply rules, rebates, First Nations tax situations, or business-specific rules. This calculator applies only the standard general sales tax rate for the selected province or territory.
- Does this calculator include special taxes on alcohol, fuel or vehicles?
- No. This calculator applies only the general GST/HST/PST/QST rate. Alcohol, fuel, tobacco, vehicles, accommodation, and insurance often carry additional or different taxes that are not included here.
- Are GST/HST rates the same across Canada?
- The federal GST is 5% everywhere. However, the combined rate varies because HST provinces charge a single harmonized rate (13%–15%), some provinces add a separate PST or QST, and Alberta and the territories charge only the GST. Nova Scotia's HST decreased to 14% on April 1, 2025.
