TFSA Contribution Room Calculator Canada

Estimate your available TFSA contribution room using Canadian annual limits, your prior contributions and withdrawals. See how your room was calculated and verify it against your own records before contributing.

Estimate your TFSA contribution room

Enter combined totals across all of your TFSA accounts. Estimates use 2026 CRA rules and annual limits.

If you were already a Canadian resident when you turned 18, use the year you turned 18. If you became a Canadian resident later, use the year you became a resident. Room does not accumulate before 2009.

How TFSA contribution room works

A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) lets Canadians earn investment income tax-free. Each year, you accumulate TFSA contribution room when you are at least 18 years old and a resident of Canada for income-tax purposes. Unused room carries forward indefinitely, and eligible withdrawals are added back to your room on January 1 of the following year.

2026 TFSA contribution limit

The annual TFSA dollar limit for 2026 is $7,000.00. Your total available room for 2026 is this annual limit plus any unused room from previous years and eligible prior-year withdrawals, minus your 2026 contributions.

How unused TFSA room carries forward

If you contribute less than your available room in a given year, the unused amount carries forward and adds to your room for the next year. This continues indefinitely, so your room grows even in years you do not contribute.

How TFSA withdrawals affect contribution room

Withdrawing from a TFSA does not permanently reduce your lifetime contribution room. The amount withdrawn is added back as new contribution room on January 1 of the calendar year after the withdrawal. This calculator keeps 2026 withdrawals separate and shows them as room expected to be available in 2027.

Can I re-contribute a TFSA withdrawal in the same year?

You may re-contribute a withdrawal in the same year only if you already have enough unused contribution room. Because the withdrawal itself does not restore room until the following year, re-contributing immediately can cause an over-contribution and a potential 1% monthly tax on the excess.

TFSA contribution room for new Canadian residents

A new Canadian resident who is already 18 begins accumulating TFSA room in the calendar year they become a resident of Canada for income-tax purposes. They do not receive room for years before they were a resident. Use the year you became a resident as your first eligible year if that was later than the year you turned 18.

What happens if I over-contribute to my TFSA?

Excess TFSA amounts are generally taxed at 1% per month on the highest excess amount in each month while the excess remains. The actual tax depends on the timing and size of the excess each month, which this calculator does not collect. If a potential over-contribution is detected, reduce your contributions and confirm your room with the CRA.

Does investment growth affect TFSA contribution room?

No. Investment gains or losses inside a TFSA do not change your contribution room. Room is determined by annual limits, your contributions, and eligible withdrawals — not by account value. This calculator does not ask for market value for that reason.

Do multiple TFSAs have separate contribution limits?

No. Contribution room is shared across all of your TFSA accounts. If you hold more than one TFSA, enter the combined total of contributions and withdrawals across every account.

How to verify your TFSA contribution room

Keep your own records of every contribution and withdrawal. You can also view TFSA information in CRA My Account, but note that CRA figures may not immediately reflect recent transactions because financial institutions report TFSA activity on a schedule. Always verify against your own records before contributing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?
The 2026 TFSA dollar limit is $7,000. Your total available room in 2026 depends on your cumulative unused room from previous years, eligible prior withdrawals, and any contributions you have already made in 2026.
How do I calculate my TFSA contribution room?
Your TFSA contribution room generally equals your cumulative annual TFSA limits from the year you became eligible, plus eligible withdrawals from the previous year, minus your total contributions to date. This calculator estimates that total across all of your TFSA accounts.
Does unused TFSA contribution room carry forward?
Yes. Unused TFSA contribution room carries forward indefinitely and accumulates each year you are at least 18 and a Canadian resident for income-tax purposes.
Do TFSA withdrawals create new contribution room?
Yes, but not immediately. A TFSA withdrawal generally creates new contribution room on January 1 of the following calendar year, not in the year you withdraw.
Can I put a TFSA withdrawal back in during the same year?
You can, but only if you have enough unused contribution room. A withdrawal does not restore room until the following year, so re-contributing in the same year can cause an over-contribution if you do not already have sufficient room.
When does withdrawn TFSA money become contribution room again?
Generally on January 1 of the calendar year after the withdrawal. For example, a 2026 withdrawal is added back as contribution room on January 1, 2027.
How does TFSA room work for new Canadian residents?
A new Canadian resident who is already 18 begins accumulating TFSA room in the calendar year they become a resident of Canada for income-tax purposes. They do not receive historical room for years before they were a resident.
Does TFSA investment growth affect contribution room?
No. Investment gains or losses inside a TFSA do not change your contribution room. Room is based only on annual limits, prior contributions, and eligible withdrawals.
What happens if I over-contribute to a TFSA?
Excess TFSA amounts are generally taxed at 1% per month on the highest excess amount in each month while the excess remains. The exact tax depends on monthly balances and timing, so this calculator flags a potential over-contribution rather than computing an exact penalty.
Is TFSA contribution room shared across multiple TFSA accounts?
Yes. Contribution room applies across all of your TFSAs combined, not per account. Enter the total contributions and withdrawals across every TFSA you hold.
Is the CRA My Account TFSA figure always up to date?
Not always. CRA TFSA information may not immediately reflect recent transactions because financial institutions report TFSA activity on a schedule, not in real time. Keep your own records and verify before contributing.
Is this calculator an official CRA calculator?
No. MapleLeafCalc is an independent informational website and is not affiliated with the Canada Revenue Agency or any government. Verify your contribution room using your own TFSA records and CRA information before contributing.
